5 Good Brazilian Wines Under 50 Reais
>
Wine consumption in Brazil has reached record levels, driven by the quarantine in 2020 and 2021, with an 18.4% growth in 2020, according to the OIV. The 2021 harvest is projected to yield 750 to 800 million kilograms of grapes, significantly above the 500 million kilograms harvested in 2020. Given this boom and the search for affordable options, Revista Bula has compiled a list of five excellent national wines that cost up to 50 reais. The featured labels are easily found in supermarkets and online wine shops, and include varietals such as Syrah from Bahia, Merlot from Serra Gaúcha (Aurora and Casa Valduga), a white wine from Serra Gaúcha, and a Cabernet Franc from Bento Gonçalves, offering various culinary pairings.

Consumption Growth and Record Harvest
Wine consumption in Brazil was already growing, and in 2020 and 2021, driven by the pandemic quarantine, it reached record levels. Data from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) show an 18.4% increase in 2020. The Brazilian Union of Viticulture (Uvibra) estimates that the 2021 harvest will total between 750 and 800 million kilograms of grapes, surpassing the 500 million kilograms of 2020. In this scenario, and with the need for affordable options, Bula selected five great national wines that cost up to 50 reais, easily found in supermarkets or online.
Sales Prospects and National Production
Deunir Argenta, president of Uvibra, sees the increase in the 2021 harvest as a reason for optimism in sales. He comments on the previous year's sales: “This is another reason for us to hope for good sales in 2021. Last year, we managed to sell what was left from 2019 and what we produced in 2020.”
Highlights of Selected National Wines
Among the selected labels, there is an expressive Syrah from Bahia, cultivated on the banks of the São Francisco River, with notes of red fruits and spices, ideal for meats. From Serra Gaúcha, an elegant Merlot from Aurora winery stands out, with fruity aromas, suitable for codfish and pasta. A white wine from the same region presents notes of lime and passion fruit flower, perfect for poultry and seafood. From Vale dos Vinhedos, a Merlot from Casa Valduga retrieves its origins with notes of red and black fruits, harmonizing with red meats and pizzas. Finally, a Cabernet Franc from Bento Gonçalves, with notes of black fruits and black pepper, and a velvety texture, which pairs well with roasted meats and risottos.
