Fiocruz to receive API on the 22nd, but vaccine production will pause for 'a few days'

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) is scheduled to receive a crucial new batch of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) on May 22, essential for the production of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine in Brazil, with an additional batch expected on May 29. However, Fiocruz warned that there will be an 'interruption in production for a few days next week' before the new API arrives, which could impact deliveries. Currently, production sustains deliveries until the first week of June, and the new batches will also ensure deliveries for the first three weeks of June. As of May 14, 34.3 million doses have been made available to the National Immunization Program (PNI), and the Bio-Manguinhos Vaccine Technology Center (CTV) processes one million doses per day, seeking to increase capacity.

Fiocruz awaits new API shipment for vaccine production

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) is awaiting a new shipment of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) on May 22, fundamental for the production of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine in Brazil, with another shipment scheduled for May 29. However, the institution warned of a temporary interruption in production before the arrival of these inputs, which could impact dose deliveries. To date, Fiocruz has already supplied 34.3 million doses to the Ministry of Health, accounting for more than 40% of the COVID-19 immunizers available in the country.

Production interruption and guarantee of future deliveries

Fiocruz confirmed that, "until the arrival of the API, there will be an interruption in production for a few days next week," which, according to the institution, may cause some impact on deliveries. Despite this, the schedule remains weekly, with deliveries always occurring on Fridays. The currently available API will sustain production until next week, ensuring deliveries until the first week of June, and with the new shipments, deliveries for the first three weeks of June will also be secured.

Increased production capacity and logistics

Currently, the Bio-Manguinhos Vaccine Technology Center (CTV) is processing one million vaccine doses per day. The institution continues to evaluate alternatives to increase its production capacity, aiming to optimize the flow and meet the growing demand for immunizers. Distribution logistics are defined by the Ministry of Health, with whom Fiocruz maintains a regular delivery schedule.
